Gua sha

What is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is an amazing treatment that involves a smooth tool being scraped gently across the skin. Also known as spooning, scraping, graston or coining, gua sha eases muscle tension, encourages lymphatic drainage and boosts blood circulation.

The process creates therapeutic petechiae on the skin, which are tiny purple, red or brown dots. These will fade to leave your skin feeling refreshed and your body invigorated.

What does gua sha help with?

As with acupuncture, gua sha is an ancient Chinese therapy and is said to be beneficial in the following ways:

  • The treatment of pain
  • Improves impaired movement
  • Break up muscle adhesions
  • Enables better healing of injured soft tissue
  • Eases upper respiratory conditions
  • Improves digestive problems
  • Helps many acute and chronic conditions
  • Encourages blood flow
  • Stimulates immune and anti-inflammatory response.

Does gua sha hurt?

Gua sha isn’t painful but the procedure may change the appearance of your skin – you might get some of those petechiae we talked about earlier. But don’t worry. That is supposed to happen, and the petechiae will fade.

It is a natural healing remedy and patients often feel invigorated after treatment.
